Jake Shears shares new track ‘Sad Song Backwards’
The Scissor Sisters’ front-man Jake Shears has just unveiled his brand new single Sad Song Backwards, the second track from his highlyanticipated, self-titled debut solo album, out on August 10th.
Sad Song Backwards is the perfect embodiment of the sound and spirit of Jake Shears, a musical affirmation of turning your troubles inside out. Stream it below!
On the track, Shears says,
This is simultaneously one of the most upbeat and one of the darkest songs I’ve ever written. It’s about someone going through a very rough patch to say the least. I read somewhere that if you’re really sad, to just walk around smiling really big, and it will release some kind of endorphin to make you feel better. But then you end up looking like a total psycho. This song is basically the equivalent.
Drawing on a rich range of influences (Bobbie Gentry, swampy southern Soul, Elton John and Marc Bolan), Jake’s debut album was conceived following Scissor Sisters’ hiatus in 2012, when Shears – following a few lost years in Los Angeles – found a new muse and home in New Orleans.
The result is a thrilling work that plays inside some of the hallmarks of classic pop and marries them with Jake’s inimitable point of view, humor, and irresistible hooks. Recording the initial ideas in the city’s famed Marigny Studios, Shears then decamped to Louisville, KY to record the album with Kevin Ratterman (Ray LaMontagne, My Morning Jacket) at his magical hub of creativity La La Land.
