5WEST
Up-and-coming US 4-piece group 5WEST, consisting of members Caleb Duke, Owen Pastore, Jon Paul Nesheiwat and Peet Montzingo, took the world by storm last year when they performed at Gran Canaria Pride, The President’s Ball in Cape Town and supported Boyzone on their UK tour. Their 2019 debut single Stars About You went straight into the top 30 of the Billboard charts and the top 10 of the Music Week charts. They are now signed to the world’s leading live agency Martial Arts (P!NK, Sir Paul McCartney, Elton John) and have recently released their brand new single One Shot, a captivating piece of R&B-tinged pop music with a chorus so catchy it’ll be in your head for days.

To accompany the release of this gorgeous song, the guys shared its cool music video which was directed by Samuel Womer. Check it out below!

I was lucky enough to ask the guys a few questions so we could get to know them a bit more which you can read below!

First of all, I’d like to say that I am really enjoying your new single One Shot, which has lovely melodies and quite an infectious chorus. Can you tell us a bit more about the recording process of the song and how was it working with Bryan Todd?
Jon Paul - Working with Bryan Todd is always a blast for us. The amount of good vibes, energy, and creativity that storms into the room is so phenomenal to see. He always knows how to raise the bar every new recording we make with him.

Is this the first taste of a full-length studio album to come out soon?
Owen - Is this the first taste of a full-length studio album to come out soon? Quite possibly soon, but at the moment we’re just focused on getting a few good singles out.

What are your musical inspirations and how do they influence the way you make your own music?
Caleb - I would say 1975, John Mayer, Tom Misch, and Jon Bellion all these Company have mastered the way they write and create and it inspires me to do the same .

How would you guys describe your sound?
Peet - Our sound is definitely pop, but it has developed an urban and mature spin. We are also an advocate for harmonies and catchy melodies.

Can you tell us how the band was formed and what was the inspiration behind the name 5West?
Jon Paul - The Name 5west originated from where our auditions were held! LA! West Coast of the US. Originally we were sticking to have 5 members, hence 5west but we ended up sticking to 4. The name still works and it’s always a conversation starter when people ask “Why is the band called 5west when there’s only 4 of you?” We like to crack jokes at it every so often.

How’s a normal working day for you guys? Do you guys usually hang out when not working?
Owen - Well, since quarantine we’ve only been able to work a few days together, but we’re constantly on zoom calls together, brainstorming and coming up with content.

You had quite an amazing and busy 2019, performing all over the world and supporting Boyzone on their UK tour. What has been your favourite place to perform?
Peet - Each venue had a different kind of magic and we felt it walking around backstage. Many great legends roamed those halls and you could feel it.

What are your best memories of all the places you’ve performed so far?
Jon Paul - One of the best memories was walking out back of the London palladium and seeing all the fans waiting for us to come out. I can’t lie, the amount of joy and excitement I saw from them was overwhelming and I still can’t get enough of that feeling. Still wanna thank the guys of boyzone for giving us that opportunity.

The current pandemic saw most of us spending quite a lot of time at home. How did you guys, as a band, cope with it? What did you do to kill some time? Any binge-watching shows you’d recommend?
Caleb - As a band we had a lot of calls with Bryan catching us up on everything and as for me my job stayed open so my life didn’t change much.

Any plans for some shows after things calm down? Or just focusing on making more great music?
Owen - We’ve got a lot of things planned for the near future, and we’re really hopeful things get back to normal soon. But we’ve gotta keep everything hush hush for now.

If you were given the chance to pick an artist to collaborate with which one would you choose and why?
Peet - BTS. They are a revolutionary group and 11 guys on one track… what could go wrong?!

If you had to be someone else in this band who would you be and why?
Jon Paul - I would be Caleb. The man is tall as heck and so chill to be around. Love his vibe and energy he gives off.

What was the first album each one of you bought?
Owen - First album I bought was Shawn Mendes’s 2nd album “Illuminate”.

What music are you currently listening to?
Peet - Dua Lipa, Billie Elish, Lauv to name a few.

If you could only listen to one album for the rest of your life which one would it be and why?
Caleb - John Mayer battle studies cause its literally the best album ever.

So far, What is your favourite 2020 song to listen to?
Peet - Right now it’s our song One Shot!
