Mallow Hill Share New Single ‘Smoke’

Baltimore-based band Mallow Hill share their brand new single Smoke, a captivating indie-pop song with soulful touches.

Produced, arranged, and co-written by Grammy-nominated Dex Green (Elvis Costello, Margo Price, Nicole Atkins, Aaron Lee Tasjan, Shemekia Copeland), Smoke is a relatable song about how one's struggles with addiction affect their relationships, a message flawlessly delivered through Mikayla Joseph's stunning vocals. I am loving the tone of her voice and how it has a raspy touch (which reminds me of Duffy and Amy Winehouse) that enhances the emotion and soul pouring from her delivery. Backing her delivery we have ssteady drum patterns that are seamlessly intertwined with subtle synths, cool mellotron and organ that together create an overall warm, comforting atmosphere perfect for a laid-back, introspective day.

Speaking about the song, singer Mikayla Joseph said,
I think a lot of people will be able to relate to this song for several different reasons. Writing it was my way of expressing what it’s like to deal with someone you love struggle with addiction and substance abuse and how it presents itself in relationships. It healed my heart just a little bit. Fighting the demons that push you into a place where you become dependent on drugs and alcohol is hard enough by itself, trying to do it alone is even harder. And loving an addict is heartbreaking.
