Speaking about the song, Amelie Lucille said,

I named it "Starts with us" after the last lyric in the song "even when it starts with us, it's always gonna end with her". This lyric was just a tragic realisation of me always being the second choice. I wrote this song during a time I was trying to simplify a complicated situation I had been put in. I loved how simple but (hopefully) effective the production turned out to be and I really hope this song resonates with you in however way you understand it.
